Nick Hamilton runs Barnsdale Gardens in Rutland, which showcases 38 individual gardens all designed and built on organic principles.

The gardens are complemented by the Chelsea Gold Medal award-winning nursery, where they sell a wide variety of high-quality plants that are mostly propagated from the gardens.

Finally, the excellent Helenium Tea Room serves everything from tea and cake through to full meals which are very popular with the Rutland locals.

Nick is a great client of ours who truly loves gardening and is a recognised international expert in horticulture. His vision for the gardens and his personal values dictates the way he runs Barnsdale Gardens.

Nick opened Barnsdale Gardens more than 25 years ago and wanted help from us to build on the solid foundations he had put in place.

Nick says…

“I have a very positive view of the future, 100% more positive than it what before and that’s down to my coach. After my initial meeting, I was relieved of quite a lot of stress.

Coaching has made me look at my business in a different way. ActionCOACH has helped massively, my results are a lot better and our mail order business is doing 1000% more than the previous year.

Rupert always holds me accountable and I have a beaming smile when I tick something off my list, I was quite disorganised before.

For anyone considering joining ActionCOACH? I would say go for it, I have had such a good experience and the results speak for themselves.”

Nick Hamilton, Owner & Managing Director

Coach Rupert says…

“Our coaching sessions are relaxed with humour but always business-focused, at times pulling in other members of the team to work on specific areas across the business.

Much of my work with Nick is focused on putting structure around the way he runs the business, which Nick freely admits is not his area of expertise (he has also noted my lack of expertise in gardening!).

As with any business, there are numerous challenges to address but he is keen to learn and do more.

Nick is always happy to consider new ideas and we regularly debate how to adapt them to align with his values.

We have over time worked on his vision, mission, and culture for Barnsdale Gardens, implemented budgets and supporting processes, identified the Key Performance Indicators to drive the business, tweaked the organisational structure, regularly reviewed the marketing, and implemented processes across the business.

There is still much to do but Nick and Barnsdale Gardens are a great example of how the coaching relationship works.”

Rupert Turton, Business Growth Specialist for ActionCOACH Oakham & Kettering started coaching Nick during the Covid pandemic (see video). To this day Nick attends his 121 coaching sessions and joins in group activities such as our quarterly Growth Club.
