How to be a better Managing Director; Goal Posts
How to be a better Managing Director is a common question asked on Google and one we address regularly. Great MDs or leaders are not consistently changing the goal posts for their teams.
You won’t find successful leaders flitting around from one goal to the next, changing their minds on what they want to achieve as quickly as the wind changes.
The trouble is, that some leaders do move the goal posts as they change their minds.
Their focus changes so the team has wasted precious time on one project, only for them to change direction and do something else.
Sometimes, goals do have to change but if it’s something that happens regularly in a business, there is fundamentally something wrong.
This can result in a business getting stuck, not progressing as it could do, and above all creating an unhappy team.
I find that MDs or leaders don’t intentionally set out for the goal posts to be moved. It may be down to an unclear vision to start with, being too easily influenced by others, or being too reactive to circumstances.
It may be down to a lack of confidence in managing a business or team (imposter syndrome). Basically, there are many reasons why this occurs.

The key is being aware that you are doing this. Ask your team for feedback on a regular basis, and give them the opportunity to contribute their ideas, their constructive thoughts, and so on.
360-degree feedback in a workplace can contribute to clearer goals that everyone has bought into, a happier team and you will be a much happier MD because your business goals are being met.
