A quick and easy technique to switch off at the end of the working day
Many business owners and leaders experience times when they have found it difficult to switch off from work. Even with the best of intentions to log off at a certain time, or ensure evenings and weekends are free, it’s all too easy to keep on working.
Just doing an extra half hour can turn into two hours, or finishing off tasks on a Saturday morning can take up most of your day and before you know it, your work-life balance is totally out of kilter.
For some, they may ‘physically’ finish work, but mentally they haven’t truly switched off. Without the transition from office to home to give you much-needed headspace, it can be hard to put the worries of the day to one side and enjoy your free time.
Prioritising your work-life balance and knowing how to switch off at the end of the working day, is one of the best things you can do to look after your mental health, as well as your business!
A great exercise we use is a ‘brain dump.’ It’s simple but very effective. Write down everything you need to do the next day the evening before. (Or Friday evening, ready for Monday morning).
Doing this daily will help you to feel much more organised, and because of this, you are likely to achieve more the next day (meaning less need to work extra hours).
Having the tasks written down will also make you feel more relaxed because you will spend less time worrying about what there is to do.
We find a daily ‘brain dump’ really works for us. If you’ve tried this technique and you’re still struggling to switch off, we advise seeking professional support whether it be a coach, your GP, or another supportive person you can trust.
