Why breaking up your business plans will lead to success

Some of you may have already lost sight of your goals, given up, or feel deflated that you are not achieving what you want to achieve. In my experience, this usually happens when there is a rather large goal set but no smaller goals/smaller steps to help you get there. Read on for our advice…

It’s akin to trying to lose weight, your ultimate goal may be to lose a stone, but without setting smaller SMART goals such as losing 1Ib a week, cutting down on sugar by half, or taking exercise at least 3 times a week then you are much more likely to fail.

It works just the same in business. I advise preparing your annual plan with a view to your long-term goals, then chunk it down into 90-day segments which can be further broken down into 3 months and even 13 weeks if appropriate. When doing your 90-day plan, the devil is in the detail. Get clear on your goals, define what actions you need to take to achieve those goals, and assign an owner to each action. Then daily/weekly work towards completing each smaller task.

There is no doubt that you can complete each individual task, which will give you the confidence to move toward your longer-term goal, and guess what, you are far more likely to reach the long terms goals far more quickly!
