The rules of life have changed, virtually overnight. The speed of change has left me shocked and fearful.  I am struggling to come to terms with our reality right now, I am not in charge of the speed of change and that is frightening.

But I have been an accountant for 30 years and I am now a business coach and I have a duty to put those skills to use in the local community. I am not a doctor or a scientist, I can’t fight this virus, but I can help fight the economic fallout from the virus.

For all business owners, now is the time for action, regardless of the industry. You need to be looking at your businesses to find out what is the true situation and where there are dangers, risks or opportunities. If you have been forced to close your doors, then you need to be looking at how to survive the closure, what help you can get and planning on how you will be able to come out fighting when we are allowed again the comfort of our fellows.

Your business doesn’t speak in words, it speaks in numbers. Now is the time to look very carefully at your numbers.   Whatever platform you use for book-keeping, whoever keeps the books in your business, it is up to you now to listen to your business.

The first thing you will need is a cashflow – this is simply a statement of what you have in the bank right now, what is going to come in and what is going to go out.

Once you have your cashflow, you then need a plan.

Once you have a plan, you will feel more equipped to deal with whatever is coming. Then instead of cowering under the bed, as I have felt like doing all week, you can tackle one task at a time until this crisis is over. The plan will change, your to-do-list will change, but the act of doing will provided momentum and make you feel more in control.

For the duration of this crisis, I am donating all my time and efforts to get businesses in Rutland and within my circle of contacts in a position to survive and thrive. I cannot change the course of the pandemic but I can and will help any business owners out there who need my expertise and experience to get them through this.
